Important Blogging Tip: Don’t Forget to Have Fun (and Poke Fun)

by Jerod Morris on February 3, 2010

No one takes the daily process of blogging more seriously than I do, and yet sometimes I feel like I take blogging too seriously.

So today, your H2B lesson is simple: don’t forget to have fun.

Also, don’t forget to poke fun at yourself every now and again. Show your readers that you don’t take yourself too seriously.

And to prove that I practice what I preach, I have prepared a short, fun video as a reward to all of our readers for helping to make the first few months of How-to-Blog.TV such a success.

We’ll see if Derick and Matt think it’s as funny as I do.

This video was made at the site JibJab.com, which really is an amazing resource for throwing your readers an easy-to-create curveball, making a unique greeting card for a friend or family member, or for using old pictures of your hockey-obsessed co-workers to create a funny video showing what they really do at those “open ice sessions”.

[Note: notice how I said poke fun at "yourself" above? Sure you can do that...but it's so much more entertaining to do it to someone else - if it's good natured - especially when they aren't expecting it.]

If you have a daily blog, don’t hesitate to switch things up every now and then, change your tone, or give your readers something they are not expecting. When your readers can learn something from you and have a little a fun and a few laughs every now and then, they are far more likely to come back.

Furthermore, you are much more likely to maintain your motivation and excitement to blog when you allow yourself to have a little fun with it. So do it, have some fun. If it’s genuine, it will translate to your readers and I bet they’ll appreciate it.

* – I would like to issue a special thank you to both Derick and Matt for having photos with perfectly appropriate facial expressions easily accessible through Google image searches of their names. It made the creation of this video so much easier and more successful than it otherwise might have been.
