Now that WordPress 2.9 (named “Carmen McRae” after the Jazz musician) has been released – and, for the record, I’ve had no issues upgrading – what is next for WordPress?
And I don’t mean 2.9.1 (already out), 2.9.2, or any other versions of WordPress 2.9; I am talking about WordPress 3.0.
The questions abound:
- What features are going to be included in WordPress 3.0?
- When will WordPress 3.0 be released?
- Is the rumored merger of WordPress and WordPressMU going to take place in this version?
WordPress 3.0 Release Date
WordPress 3.0 is scheduled to be released in March 2010, and the dates for the releases of 3.1 and 3.2 can be found at WordPress.org on the WordPress Roadmap.

WordPress 3.0 Features
One of the main features expected for WordPress 3.0 will be the integraton of WordPress and MU. Another much needed change will be to the stock theme that comes with WordPress; yes, a new theme will come with WordPress 3.0.
From the WordPress Blog post “WordPress 2.9, oh so fine“:
2.9 has been an exciting development cycle, and I must say it has whetted our appetite for 3.0, which is coming next (probably this spring) and will include at the very least the merge of MU with the WordPress core, and a new default theme. We can’t wait to start working on it. But first, some Carmen McRae tunes and a beer. Join us!
Other Interesting WordPress 3.0 Features
These are some of the other interesting open tickets I found at WordPress Trac in the open tickets.
- Add sorting options to media library (+uploader)
- Add New Plugin search/browse listing links
- Pick a username during the install
- Support “shortlink” URL shortening
- When an upgrade borks, There needs to be an ability to rollback
- Insert button in Media Uploader
There are loads of other enhancements for WordPress 3.0, and you should feel free to list anything that you find in the comments section of this post so we can discuss them.

The most important featuers I want to use is to integrate a eshop cart in the system. Or Multisite surpport. I know that wordpress can work as a CMS, but the feature of CMS is little.
Well, WordPress 3.0 was released. The new default theme Twenty Ten and custom menus are enough to convice to upgrade
